What is Made-to-Order?

Made-to-order (MTO) refers to a custom fantasy toy produced specifically for the buyer after they place an order, allowing full control over model, size, firmness, and colorway.

How Do You Customize Your Toy?

Made-to-order is the ultimate personalization experience in the fantasy toy world. Instead of choosing from pre-made inventory, you configure your ideal toy from the ground up. Select the model you want, pick your preferred size, choose a firmness level, decide on a signature colorway or request maker's choice, and add options like a cumtube or suction cup base. The maker then produces exactly what you specified.

This level of customization is one of the defining features that separates indie fantasy toy makers from mass-produced adult products. Every MTO piece is crafted individually for its buyer.

What Does the MTO Process Look Like?

After placing your order, the maker adds it to their production queue. Your toy is sculpted, molded, poured, cured, demolded, trimmed, and inspected according to your specifications. The entire process from order placement to shipment is measured as TAT (Turn Around Time), which typically ranges from 4 to 12 weeks depending on the maker's current queue depth.

Some makers send progress photos during production -- showing the custom pour in progress or the freshly demolded piece before final trimming. This behind-the-scenes access is part of the appeal, giving buyers a connection to the craftsmanship behind their piece.

How Does MTO Compare to Ready-to-Ship?

The choice between MTO and ready-to-ship (RTS) comes down to patience versus specificity. MTO gives you exactly what you want but requires waiting weeks or months. RTS gives you instant gratification but limits you to whatever the maker has already produced. Many collectors use both approaches: buying RTS pieces from drops when a colorway catches their eye, and placing MTO orders for specific configurations they cannot find pre-made.

When Is MTO Available?

Not all makers accept MTO orders continuously. Many operate on a customs opening model, accepting a limited batch of custom orders during a specific window and then closing their queue until the batch is complete. This prevents overwhelming backlogs and ensures manageable TAT for each customer.

When a popular maker announces a customs opening, the available slots can fill within hours. Collectors who want a specific custom configuration often monitor the maker's social media closely and order immediately when the window opens.

How Do You Get the Most from MTO?

Before placing an MTO order, research the maker's available options thoroughly. Review their swatch gallery for colorway references, order firmness samples if you are unsure about softness level, and read the maker's FAQ about what is and is not customizable. Clear communication about your preferences upfront prevents disappointment when your piece arrives weeks later.
